Madame Alexander Dolls and Their History

Madame Alexander Dolls

Madame Alexander Dolls Founder, Beatrice Alexander was born on March 9, 1895, in New York City. Maurice Alexander was Madame's father. He operated one of the the first doll hospitals in New York City where he not only repaired dolls but sold pieces of porcelain and some new dolls. Little Beatrice (Madame) would see the tears in the eyes of the children when they brought in their dolls to be fixed at her fathers shop. She also got to see the looks of joy on their faces when they got their special baby dolls back good as new.

In 1912 Beatrice got married to her husband Phillip Behrman. Their daughter, Mildred was born in 1915. After being successful making doll clothes, Beatrice and her husband started the Madame Alexander Doll Company in 1923. Madame added a line of quality Porcelain and vinyl dolls to her already popular doll clothes. Her dolls have brought joy and love to hundreds of thousands of children young and old through the years.

Madame Alexander Dolls was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame in 2000. Starting their 77th year in the doll business, the company also branched out into collectible figurines and introduced a a line of small porcelain dolls. 2000 was also the birth of Alexander Fairchild Ford, their newest fashion doll. Figurines, music boxes, and curio boxes made by Alexander Dolls were discontinued at the end of 2001. Now in her 84th year the Madame Alexander Doll Company is still going strong. If you are looking for a retired doll or figurines you may still need please browse our extensive inventory. We just might have what you need.

Madame Alexander Dolls is timeless and is always bringing back timeless favorites of yesteryear. This year expect to find even more special dolls along with your old favorites. Some of the dolls have a 1953 style scuplted face to bring back the look of bygone years. Self-standing shoes have been introduced on some of the dolls and still other dolls have been made with bent-knees.

While Madame herself is not around anymore, her tradition of quality dolls is still going strong. Every year the Alexander Doll Company brings us wonderful dolls that have people young or old reliving the magic of that special doll. You might even find some clothes or shoes to outfit one of your older dolls.
